CATCH ME BIRD DANCE THEATER

Catch Me Bird Dance Theater was formed by LA Contemporary dancers C. Derrick Jones and Nehara Kalev in 2003, with Ry joining as Composer, Songwriter and Music Director soon after. Having met while at UCLA and while members of LA’s acclaimed Contemporary Dance company Diavolo, the two became engaged and formed Catch Me Bird Dance Theater with the goal of incorporating their wedding into a performance-length dance production. Successfully achieving this goal at the premier of “The Wedding Journey: Vows in Mid-Air”” at LA’s Wilshire Ebell Theater in 2004, the company created and staged three more productions before disbanding in 2011. All with music by Ry Welch, “The Wedding Journey” (2004), “The Wedding Journey: Paper” (2005), "Catch Me Bird: Silk” (2008), and “Catch Me Bird: Iron” (2010) document in dance and music a deep artistic partnership, and an understanding of how to use music and movement to communicate symbolic ideas.
